In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to overlook the impact of the products we use in our homes.
Commercial cleaning agents often contain harsh chemicals that not only harm the environment but can also be detrimental to our health. This is where homemade cleaning products come in – offering a natural and sustainable alternative.
What are the key advantages of using homemade cleaning products?
- Cost-Effective
Making your cleaning products involves using ingredients you probably have at home.
Preparing your own All-Purpose spray will cost you $0.50-$1 per batch; buying it will cost $3-$5 per bottle. - Reduced Chemical Exposure
By opting for DIY cleaning recipes that use natural and simple ingredients, you can significantly reduce your exposure to potentially harmful chemicals commonly found in commercial cleaners. - Customizable Formulas
DIY cleaning allows you to tailor formulas to meet your specific cleaning needs. - Environmental Friendliness
Did you know that in the United States, cleaning product companies are not required to disclose the type of ingredients used in their products? By creating your own cleaning solutions, you have complete control over what ingredients you use, allowing you to make more eco-friendly and sustainable choices that are kinder to the environment. - Minimized Packaging Wast
By creating your own cleaning products, you can minimize the usage of plastic bottles since you can simply reuse them. - Versatility and Multi-Use Ingredients
Many DIY cleaning ingredients, such as vinegar, baking soda, and lemon, have multiple uses beyond cleaning.

What cleaning products do I recommend?
Glass Cleaner
What you’ll need :
- 2 cups water
- 1/2 cup cider vinegar or white vinegar
- 1/4 cup rubbing alcohol 70% concentration
- 1 to 2 drops of lavender essential oil for smell (optional)
This is my go-to solution for clean windows and mirrors. Mix the ingredients, pour them into a spray bottle, and enjoy the essentail oil smell.
Toilet bowl cleaner
What you’ll need :
- 1 cup baking soda
- 1 cup citric acid
- 1 cup distilled white vinegar
- essential oils (lavender oil, eucalyptus oil): 10-15 drops
In a bowl, combine the baking soda and citric acid. Add essential oil. Pour distilled white vinegar into the dry mixture. Stir it; don’t be surprised when it gets fizzy—it’s just the ingredients reacting. Aim for a paste-like consistency. Once ready, transfer it to a container. Apply the cleaner evenly in the toilet bowl and let it sit for 15-20 minutes. Scrub the toilet with a brush and flush.
Greasy pans solution
What you’ll need :
- 2 tablespoons baking soda
- 1 tablespoon dish soap
- hot water: enough to create a paste
- vinegar (optional): 1 tablespoon
In a bowl, combine 2 tablespoons of baking soda with 1 tablespoon of dish soap. Add hot water and stir until a paste consistency is achieved. Apply the paste to greasy areas of the pan. Let it sit for at least 15-20 minutes, allowing the baking soda and dish soap to break down the grease. Scrub using a brush or sponge
Countertop Cleaner
What you’ll need :
- 1/4 cup alcohol — rubbing or cheap vodka
- 3 drops of dish or Castile soap
- Water
- 5-10 drops of your favorite essential oil
Begin by pouring alcohol into the spray bottle, followed by adding dish soap. Then, incorporate several drops of essential oil and fill the remaining space in the bottle with water. Finally, shake the bottle to thoroughly combine all the ingredients. This solution works great with marble, granite, and other stones. You can also use it to clean other kitchen appliances
Homemade cleaning solution
What you’ll need :
- 1/2 cup white vinegar
- 2 tablespoons baking soda
- Lavender essential oil or orange essential oil
In a spray bottle, mix vinegar with baking soda and wait until the fizzing subsides. Then, add essential oil and shake it.
Floor Cleaner
What you’ll need :
- 2 cups warm water
- 1/2 cup white vinegar
- 1/4 cup rubbing alcohol
- 3 drops of liquid dish soap
- 5-10 drops of essential oil
Combine the ingredients in a spray bottle. This solution doesn’t require the floor to be rinsed; you can simply swipe the floor with a clean mop head afterward.
Stain remover
What you’ll need :
- 2 tablespoons of baking soda
- 1 cup Hydrogen Peroxide
- ½ cup dish soap
Mix all the ingredients in a spray bottle. Apply a generous amount of the solution to a stain, rub it with your hands or a toothbrush, and let it sit for a minimum of 1 hour. Wash it as usual.
Garbage disposal cleaner
What you’ll need :
- Citrus peels (lemons, oranges, or a combination)
- Ice cubes
- White vinegar
Gather citrus peels from lemons or oranges and cut them into small, manageable pieces. Place the citrus peels in a blender and blend until you get a coarse mixture. The citrus oils will add a refreshing scent to your cleaning tabs. Fill each section of an ice cube tray with the blended citrus peels. Press the mixture down to compact it slightly. Pour white vinegar over the citrus peel mixture in each ice cube compartment. The vinegar will react with the ice and citrus, creating a fizzing action. Place the ice cube tray in the freezer and let the mixture freeze completely.
Place one or two tabs into the garbage disposal. Turn on the cold water and run the garbage disposal. The ice will help clean the blades, while the citrus and vinegar will freshen and eliminate odors.
Mosquito Spray
What you’ll need :
- 1/2 cup witch hazel
- 1/2 cup distilled water
- 10 drops citronella essential oil
- 10 drops eucalyptus essential oil
- 10 drops tea tree essential oil
- 5 drops lavender essential oil
- 5 drops peppermint essential oil
In the mixing bowl, combine the citronella, eucalyptus, lavender, and peppermint essential oils. Pour the witch hazel into the mixing bowl with the essential oil mixture. Witch hazel serves as a base for the spray and has additional skin-soothing properties. Pour the distilled water into the bowl, combining it with the other ingredients. Use a spoon or stir stick to mix the ingredients thoroughly. Ensure that the essential oils are well-distributed than pour the mixture into a clean and empty spray bottle. Before each use, shake the spray bottle well to ensure all the ingredients are properly mixed.
- This DIY mosquito spray is for external use only. Do not ingest.
- Perform a patch test on a small area of skin to ensure there are no allergic reactions to the essential oils.
